Worcester, MA - It was a tough day for the Bears (2-5) - maybe some "hangover" affects from Thursday nights 4OT loss to Stonehill. Coach Ostrowski said there wasn't much good to say. Despite the score, he praised the play of his goalie, 4/c Corey Pray, and close defense - 3/c Greg Bernstein (5 groundballs), 3/c John Kearney (6 groundballs) and 3/c Paul Junghans (4 groundballs). The Bears were outshot 45-21 and Pray made 17 saves. Defensive midfielder 3/c James McCormack had 5 groundballs. The offensive stat sheet included 2/c Roger Nayden 2 goals, 2/c Craig Valencia 1 goal/1 assist/3 groundballs, 4/c Patrick Driscoll 1 goal/6 groundballs, 4/c Daniel Symansky 1 goal/3 groundballs, and 3/c Matt Chase 1 assist. Noticeably missing from the stat sheet was the Bears leading scoring, 3/c Kyle Ennis, who went down with a knee injury in the 1st quarter - no word on his outlook.

Will write more as details come available...bottom line - the winner of the Coast Guard - CCSU game on Friday night hosts the Quarterfinal playoff game the following Wednesday...confidence levels are high...GO BEARS!

The Bears (2-4) put up a great fight, but squandered two MAN-UP opportunities in OT and gave up a fast-break goal off the opening draw of the fourth overtime period to take a tough 12-11 loss at home. Both teams struck iron during the OT periods before Stonehill scored on a fastbreak goal from 2-3 yards in front of the crease. Coast Guard trailed 10-8 with about seven minutes to go in the 4th quarter when they came alive with three unanswered goals to take the lead 11-10. Unfortunetly, Stonehill scored with about a minute to go in the game to knot it at 11 all. The individual performance of the night came from defensemen 3/c Greg Bernstein who held Stonehill's Colin Lancey (2008 MCLA Division 1 3rd Team All-American) to 0 goals on the evening to go with 0 penalty minutes. In addition, Coach Ostrowski highlighted gutty performances from long poles 4/c Patrick Buckley and 3/c Paul Junghans who had 6 groundballs. 3/c Craig Valencia and 4/c Daniel Symansky led the team with 8 groundballs a piece - Valencia also chipped in with 2 goals, Symansky had 1 assist. 3/c Kyle Ennis topped the stat sheet with 4 goals/1 assist/2 groundballs followed close behind by 3/c Matt Chase with 4 goals/5 groundballs. 4/c Patrick Driscoll also contributed to the Bears offensive numbers with 1goal/1 assist. The Bears outshot the Skyhawks 40-29 and 4/c Corey Pray had another amazing game in the cage making 17 saves. For those OLD BEARS reading this, RDML Atkins, current Commander, Deployable Operations Group (DOG) and former Mathematics Instructor and Head Lacrosse Coach in the early 90's, was seen in the stands with Professor Manfred proudly sporting a Coast Guard lacrosse jersey.

The Bears had another offensive explosion against Bridgewater State scoring 17 goals. Coast Guard was led offensively by 3/c Matt Chase with 6 goals / 5 ground balls, 3/c Kyle Ennis with 3 goals/ 2 assists / 6 ground balls, 4/c Patrick Driscoll with 3 goals/ 2 assists/ 6 ground balls and 2/c Matt Edes with 2 goals / 3 assists and 1:30 in the box . Defenseman 3/c Greg Bernstein did the dirty work again leading the team with 7 ground balls, while fellow defenseman 3/c John Kearney chipped in with six. The Bears scored 5 or more goals in each of the first 3 quarters and led 11-7 at halftime. Another big 3rd quarter saw Coast Guard outscore BSU 5-1 to pull away. In addition to 3 groundballs, 3/c Paul Junghans had a "beautiful assist" to Edes with the long pole on a fastbreak. Coast Guard outshot BSU 45-30 and Goalie 4/c Corey Pray had 16 saves in the goal. 4/c Greg Bowens stepped in between the pipes when 4/c Corey Pray was called for a cross-check and made a great save to start his Coast Guard career. Other Bears on the offensive stat sheet included: 2/c Andrew Cinque 1 goal, 2/c Roger Nayden 1 goal / 1 assist, 4/c Daniel Symansky 1 goal / 4 groundballs and 2/c Craig Valencia 1 assist. Coach Ostrowski reported that he was pleased with the teams execution with some new offensive and defensive sets. He was also happy with the MAN-DOWN defense and the fact that everyone who dressed was able to play including some first-timers.

BEARS EXPLODE FOR 15 GOALS AGAINST CHARGERS - WIN 15-3

The Bears had an offensive explosion against PCLL D2 South conference rival University of New Haven. The Bears were led by 3/c Matt Chase with 6 goals and 3/c Kyle Ennis with 3 goals, 4 assists. Captain 2/c Roger Nayden also checked in with 2 goals, 2 assists and 4/c Patrick Driscoll had 1 goal, 2 assists. Coast Guard led 8-2 at the half and held the Chargers to just one second half goal. Game ball went to 3/c Matt Chase for his offensive outpouring. The "JACKED UP" Hit Coin went to 4/c Graham Pitcairn - the Pride of Bryn Athyn, PA. Shots were pretty even with the Bears edging out the Chargers 37-36. Goalie 4/c Cory Pray had 20 saves between the pipes - impressive. Coast Guard won the ground ball battle 55-41. 3/c Paul Junghans and 4/c Daniel Symansky did the dirty work leading the team with six groundballs a piece while Duxbury, MA's finest, 3/c John Kearney, contributed five. The Bears turned things around on extra-man offense with the MAN-UP unit going 5-for-5. Thanks to the "Jail-bait" efforts of 1/c Mike Higbie and 3/c Greg Bernstein with 3:00 of penalty time each (easy on the lumber fellas - actually Coach Ostrowski said they were calling it tight), Coast Guard's MAN-DOWN unit was able to hold UNH to an impressive 1-for-11 afternoon. Best of all, after being outgunned 11-2 in the 3rd quarter the last 3 games, the Bears went on a 6-0 run in the 3rd. Others on the scoreboard for the Bears were: 2/c Andrew Cinque 1 goal; 3/c Trevor Clark 1 assist (with the long stick - LSM); 2/c Matt "Moose, Ruocco, help the judge find his checkbook" Edes 1 goal; and 2/c Craig Valencia 1 goal.

The Bears came out and played a hell of a first half - managing to keep it close through halftime trailing just 5-4. However, they came out flat again to start the second half and managed only one goal while giving up eight in the second half. 4/c Jimmy McCormick played a great game at short stick defensive midfield - his first lacrosse game EVER. Coach Ostrowski said they put together the best 30 minutes to start the game he's seen all season - all ten players clicking as a single unit. Most of the goals in the second half were fast breaks off bad transitions - this has been a recurring theme the last few weeks - something the Bears will have to solve if they hope to compete for post-season honors. 3/c Matt Chase led all scorers with 3 goals and 1 assist, followed by 3/c Kyle Ennis with 1 goal and 3 assists. 2/c Matt "Moose, Roucco - Help the Judge find his checkbook" Edes had 1 goal and 3/c Craig Velencia had an assist. Captain 2/c Roger Nayden and 3/c Craig Velencia led the team with 6 ground balls each. URI outshot the Bears 29-28 - Goalie 4/c Corey Pray had 5 saves. The game ball went to McCormick for his outstanding hustle. The "JACKED UP" Hit Coin went to 4/c Corey Pray who came out of the goal to make a huge hit on an unsuspecting Ram attacker. The Bears, now 1-4, will look to "right the ship" against PCLL Division 2 South rival - the University of New Haven - on Sunday. Will write more as details come in.

Doug and I have been running this site...it's pretty easy. In addition, we (mostly Doug and a few cadets) have also been running the Coast Guard Academy Lacrosse team site at:

While I firmly believe we have the 80% solution, we need someone who knows how to do this to provide us with some professional "consultation" - over a weekend would probably do.

The TEAM website is the face of Coast Guard Academy Lacrosse...it's the FIRST IMPRESSION and we want to get it right. There are just a few things we want to do that are beyond our technical know-how...one of the first is posting a continuous slide show similar to the one at the top of the OLD BEARS blog...help us!

BEARS LOSE TOUGH ONE TO NAVY MIDSHIPMEN 16-5; END SPRING BREAK TRIP 1-1

Bears open the season 1-1.

The CGA Bears opened the 2009 campaign 1 and 1 during their second annual trip to the National Capital Region.

A pared down squad traveled to Baltimore from New London on Friday, March 6th, where they stayed at team parent’s houses.

Saturday saw the Bears take the field against the UMBC Retrievers. The affects of a week of lost practice were evident during the first half, resulting in a score of 3-3. Coast Guard knocked off the rust and took control in the second half, scoring four goals. UMBC notched one late in the game, resulting in a Coast Guard win with a final of 7-4. 4/C Chris Pray was impressive in goal, and the EMO and faceoff play was solid throughout the game.

Sunday, the Bears played USNA’s club team in the first ever game between the service academies. Conditions were near perfect at Farragut Field onboard USNA, with temps in the 70’s. Navy got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. 3/C Matt Chase scored Coast Guard’s first goal on a great drive from top left, which got the 100+ Coast Guard fans fired up. Coast Guard’s play was gritty and determined, but unfortunately, they couldn’t overcome the early deficit and superior numbers of the Navy team.
The final score was Navy 16, Coast Guard 5. Despite the apparent lop-sided score, the Bears kept their heads high, putting forth an impressive, never quit performance while playing against one of the top collegiate club programs in the nation. Goalie Chris Pray finished with 18 saves, some of which were spectacular one-on-one stops.

Sunday’s event was concluded by a joint Navy-Coast Guard post-game tailgate sponsored by parents from both teams as well as the Old Bears. The guys left it all out on the field, and then were able to have an excellent time socializing with the midshipmen. Special thanks go out to Old Bears Matt Orendorff, Tony Russell and Malcolm Mark for assisting me with putting together the tailgate. Additional thanks go out to the parents of our current players for providing lodging and food, as well as countless local Coasties who came out to support the team.

The next game is Friday, 20 March at UCONN.

The Coast Guard Academy Men's Lacrosse team will be "spring breaking" in the Washington DC area for several games against local club teams. Details as follows:

The "OLD BEARS" just received word that former CGA lacrosse player Tom Nelson ('88) was posthumously promoted to Captain on 02 October 2008. His family recently announced that Captain Nelson will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. - at 0830 on Friday, 17 April 2009.

Uniform Fundraising Effort reaches milestone!

Day of Rivals/Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic Tickets On Sale Nov.

Starting this weekend (November 1), lacrosse fans can purchase packages that include tickets for both events.
Single event tickets go on sale November 28. Buy early to get the best seats.

The Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic will be played on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. In just its third year, the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic has become the traditional start of the lacrosse season for the game's growing fan base. And this year, it does so with a new matchup - Duke vs Maryland, to combine with Johns Hopkins vs Princeton.

The Day of Rivals features Army vs Navy and Johns Hopkins vs Maryland on Saturday, April 11, 2009 also at M&T Bank Stadium. This mid-season event brings together the tradition of these compelling rivalries with the cutting-edge image of the nation's fastest growing sport.

"Old Bear" Lost in Action

We are sure most of you are aware of the tragic loss of the crew of 6505. What we have just recently learned was that among those lost was an "Old Bear." More below...

The “OLD BEARS” regret to report that we recently lost one of our own. U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue crews suspended the search for CDR Thomas Nelson, 42, of Staten Island, NY. CDR Nelson went missing on 4 September 2008, after his HH-65C helicopter crashed with three other crewmembers aboard during a training flight off the south shore of Oahu. The three crewmembers were recovered Thursday evening and pronounced dead at The Queen’s Medical Center. CDR Nelson remains missing.

CDR Nelson reported to Air Station Barbers Point in July 2007 as the Executive Officer. He was a member of the Coast Guard Academy Class of 1988 and played close defense for the Coast Guard Academy Lacrosse Team. Teammate and classmate CDR Nick Bartolotta remarked “he loved to poke at people with the long stick, and damn, could he clear the crease.”

CDR Tom Nelson most recently served as the Deputy Office Chief, Office of Security and Defense Operations, at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington DC, from July 2004 to June 2007. There he helped lead a 29 member staff and 15 liaison officers coordinating national homeland security policy, budget, and programming. During this assignment CDR Nelson was directly involved with improving the Nation’s abilities to prevent and respond to the use of Weapons of Mass Destruction by terrorists.

Prior to his assignment to headquarters, CDR Nelson attended the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he earned a Master of Arts and Science in Military History in 2004. His previous assignments include Air Stations Brooklyn, New York; Port Angeles, Washington; and New Orleans, Louisiana; where he served in various department head and division officer positions while fulfilling his primary role as a duty standing, deploying aviator in the HH-65 helicopter. CDR Nelson also served as a Deck Watch Officer aboard USCGC BASSWOOD (WLB-388) home ported in Guam.

CDR Nelson’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Coast Guard Commendation Medal, three Coast Guard Achievement Medals, and various other team and unit awards.

Uniform Fundraising Update

Happy Homecoming Weekend!

We are long overdue for an update. To all who have donated to the uniform fund, from Old Bears to parents to the Class of '83 - thank you! If you have yet to donate, please seriously consider donating. We are getting close and need to maintain our momentum.

Discussions regarding uniform design continue. Since the last update, there have been some refinements - the latest iteration of the uniform is posted here. Please note that this is still a notional design that is subject to more refinement. Our timeline is to finalize the design and negotiate the entire package with the uniform distributor prior to Thanksgiving. And for those Old Bears who may be interested in getting a pair of shorts (or even jersey) for themselves, we will be working to include that in the order. Details will follow.

Don't forget to keep an eye out for potential recruits!

As mentioned in the Alumni Bulletin article (we will try to link to the article shortly), as part of the 25th anniversary of Coast Guard lacrosse, we are honoring our past. Of particular note, is the tribute we are paying to LT John Senyard, CGA '83, who could be considered the "Father of Coast Guard Lacrosse." Below is the notional graphic that will be incorporated into the new uniforms, most likely on one of the shoulders. While what is displayed below is black and white, our vision is for a color version of the graphic, likely gold for the class crest with black lettering. If you have any questions about the new uniforms, the tribute to LT Senyard or our fund raising efforts, please don't hesitate to contact Doug or Sean (or leave a comment here on the blog).

General Update - Polo Shirts and Other Things

Time for another update.

First, thanks to all who have donated to the uniform fund raising efforts. We are making progress towards our goal. For your awareness, we are reaching out to other organizations, such as the CG Foundation and Parent's Associations for help. Beyond fundraising:

Polo Shirts - thanks to all who responded and ordered polo shirts. Our goal is to have them in hand around 18 August for further distribution. You will either get your shirts hand delivered or in the mail, depending on your location. Doug will be handling distribution for the East Coast Old Bears. Sean will handle West Coast distribution. There are a LIMITED number of extra shirts available, so if you run into other Old Bears that see your shirt and are interested, have them contact us.

Recruiting - Sean has put together an excellent letter that can be sent to high school lacrosse coaches in your area. If you are interested in helping with this critical effort, contact him for a copy of the letter. Additionally, we have an Old Bear web-guru who will be helping the current team to develop a recruiting page on their web-site.

Social - We can't forget about the social aspect of the Old Bears. Most activities are in the early planning stages and include events such as attendance at the Face-Off Classic and Day of Rivals during the upcoming spring 2009 season. Of course we will support the CGA team should they return to DC for spring break again. In fact, the idea of an alumni game in the DC area, to coincide with CGA's spring break trip, are being thrown around. Conceptually, it would be an odd year vs even year game held either before or after one of CGA's games. All of these projects are in the "idea development" stage - so stay tuned for details (however, if anyone thinks they might be interested is helping, let us know).

Polo Shirts: Part 2

Hey Old Bears,

As promised, more details on the Old Bears polo shirts. Hopefully you have received an email outlining ordering details and prices. If you aren't receiving emails, let us know so we can add you to the list.

A couple of key points - the shirts are embroidered. That's right, we are talking about a high quality shirt here - one that you will be proud to wear! A minor change to the design - the "Old Bears" wording above the bear will not have a white outline.

Here is more information taken from Sean's email:
"What I need are commitments and I will coordinate purchasing these and dispersing them."

If you replied to Sean's initial inquiry of about a month ago, you need to reply again - Sean didn't keep the original emails.

Price - If we get an order of 24 shirts, they are $29.95. If we get to 30, the price goes down a dollar. From there on, every additional 10 shirts results in a price decrease of $1.

A couple of other points - we have not increased the price as a fund raiser - we are selling the shirts straight up...but it would be great to get some donation money for the team uniform effort. If you have yet to contribute, please consider tacking on some extra funding to your shirt order.

When you email Sean with your order, specify number of shirts, size and address.

Show off your Coast Guard pride on the sideline and out in town!

Hey Old Bears,

It's been a while since the last post, but that is not for lack of action. Fund raising for the new uniforms continues. If you haven't contributed, we encourage you to consider a donation to the Men's Lacrosse team, via the Alumni Association. We are also attempting to collect team rosters from the last 25 years. And keep an eye on future editions of the Alumni Bulletin for an article highlighting the history of the Lacrosse Team.

One of the initiatives Sean has been working on is the design of an Old Bears polo shirt. The design is below. Final price has yet to be determined, and an email will follow shortly with details. If you are interested, email Sean. Further details will also be posted here. Show your pride and support for CGA Lacrosse with one of these limited edition shirts!

New Uniforms

Of particular importance right now is the need to purchase new uniforms for the team. The current uniforms being worn are five years old and are in dire need of replacement. You have already likely recieved emails asking to help with the funding of the new uniforms. If you have donated already - thank you. If not, we ask that you consider a donation. Donations can be sent to the Alumni Association. Please mark them for "Mens Lacrosse - Uniforms."

To help visualize what we are working towards, below is a conceptual design for the new uniforms. Please note - this may or may not be the final design.

Why a CGA LAX Old Bears Blog

A blog is the next logical step as we evolve the Old Bears network. Our hope is this site can serve as a ready source of information for CGA Lacrosse alumni. It is NOT intended to replace the team's site, rather we hope to augment the site. The site will likely evolve through time. Please feel free to post comments and suggestions on how the Old Bears can improve communication between alumni and better support the team.
